At Perry Hall, we believe music can bring excitement to our lives, intertwining feelings of love and sympathy, teaching children about different emotions, as well as elements of musical theory. Through our weekly ‘Music of the Week’ sessions, children are given the opportunity to explore and engage with a range of musicians and musical styles, developing an understanding and appreciation of culture, taste and different genres. All children enjoy regular music sessions with our music specialist, covering a range of skills in singing and instrumental playing.

Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. Children are taught and encouraged to use technical vocabulary including volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and associate these terms to a variety of music. Throughout their time at Perry Hall, children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of instruments, including bells, ukulele and recorders. We are fortunate enough to have many peripatetic teachers who offer lessons in a wide range of instruments and singing (any child eligible for pupil premium funding will be offered free private lessons in an instrument of their choice, including singing). During Year 4 all children participate in ‘Band on the Run’, a series of lessons introducing them to the wonderful world of becoming an instrumentalist. Instrumentalists from Grade 1 upwards have the opportunity to partake in our school orchestra, whilst Key Stage 2 students are encouraged to join our school choir, who were recent finalists in the Bromley Schools' Choir Competition.

Throughout their time at Perry Hall, our children have the opportunity to experience live music through visits to musical venues across London. Previous visits have included: classical children's concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre; opera and ballet at the Royal Opera House and the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre; and trips to West End musicals. Children also enjoy workshops from visiting professional musicians, including steel pan and African drumming. We also recieve annual visits from the Bromley Youth Music Trust's Inspire Orchestra.

Music is a subject for children to find enjoyment and thrive. At Perry Hall we strive to ensure we provide all children with the opportunities to achieve this.
